Here's an interesting article, but I think several of these are a stretch.
The list:
1. China vs. Everyone in the Pacific
2. China vs. The United States
3. Russia vs. NATO
4. Iran vs. Saudi Arabia
5. Civil War in Iraq
6. Kurdistan Independence War
7. Israel vs. Hezbollah
8. Civil War in Turkey
9. Civil War in Afghanistan
10. China vs. India
Now honestly, I see many on that list that just aren't realistically likely. Sure there's conflict, and those conflicts could escalate, but for a number of reasons I just don't see actual war likely in scenarios 1, 2, 3, 4, and 10. In these scenarios the risks involved in war are so heavily outweighed by continued (tentative) peace.
What is missing is the one scenario that to me is the most likely for full on war, and the most terrifying. US vs. Pakistan...
Pakistan is a nuclear nation that is always in the precipice of being taken over by the extremists. If the extremists ever do make a move, or assume control; US policy is that we invade to secure those weapons. This is actually an Obama policy and one of the very few I strongly agree with.
