Calibre Choice?

Hello, a friend here after years and years of total devotion to the 9mm just bought a pair of .40s&ws after an altercation of sorts with some 400lb Samoans...hmmm. He claims that the 200gn slug should be adequate at around 1000fps, I dunno tho, those gents are big!

Well, there's a couple of obvious little problems here… don't know many 200-grain loadings in the .40 S&W chambering, #1, and, #2, 1000 fps with the 180-grain standard is pushing things a tad on the hot side of a cartridge already on the maximum pressure cusp. I think 200-grains at 1,000 fps is a might unrealistic.
I agree with Dean.

The 200 grain weight is better off in the 10mm platform.
FWIW: There was an outfit (Mullins?) that was loading a 200gr Hornady XTP to around 950fps in .40 S&W.
Guys,

The original Thread started in Concealed Carry got taken off tangent with Ultima-Ratio's post, so I split the topic an turfed this discussion to the proper place/forum

Thanks!
Double Tap is now offering some pretty potent .40 S&W loads, albeit none with a 200 grain bullet (likely a smart decision):

- 180gr Gold Dot @ 1050fps
- 165gr Gold Dot @ 1140fps

Both velocities are from a 3.5" Glock 27.

I saw a post by Double Tap's owner, Mike McNett, on one of the gun forum boards, and (IIRC) he said these loads are something like 6,000 psi below SAAMI maximum for .40 S&W.

Impressive!

We've narrowed the powders down to V V 3N37 and Longshot and don't have anything more than Brown & Sharp Mics to SWAG pressure expansion, both the G-23 and the Beretta 96 are accurate with the 200s. Limited testing of 500rds so far so good!
