I live on a farm & can shoot any time I want to. I have set up a shooting range with shooting bench. I have been looking for a semi automatic rifle that don't jam all of the time. I have found one in the # 552 Remington. How ever I have not found one that will shoot straight. I bought a new one, same thing. I put a new Nikon prostaff scope on it. I would like to be able to put all of the bullets in a spot as big as a dime most of the time. Am I asking too much? It will, then it will throw a bullet or two 1/2 inch or 1 inch away in any direction. I used to do better than that with open sights when I was younger.

Other than the shooter the biggest variable in accuracy with rimfire is the ammo.
With a good scope such as the Nikon I think five shot groups of 1/2" at 50 yd. are not unreasonable but you will have to do some careful testing with your rifle to find out.

You have probably picked the worst time in the last hundred years to start accuracy testing of a new .22. The perfect storm of (1) thousands of new shooters being introduced to the sport, (2) the fact that many (most?) of them start with a .22, and (3) the resulting shortage of rimfire ammo causing hoarders to come out from under their rocks means that you will probably not have many good choices when you step up to the ammo counter.
I am in the same boat, but have the good fortune to have a hodgepodge of rounds that were "thrown in" with a rifle purchase a few years ago, plus quite a few samples that were provided by a good friend. The irony is, though, that once I identify the fodder my new rifle particularly likes, I won't be able to go out and buy any of it.
I've resigned myself to have fun doing what experimentation I can, and, for the time being, to shoot golf balls rather than aspirin tablets.

" jam all the time"- you need to define that- every round, every 10 rounds , or with a full mag, or 1 out of 10 mags- just too many variables- what kind of jam- failure to feed, failure to fire , failure to extract or failure to eject?- also all "new" rifles need more than a few rounds through them to get them to "settle" in- then they do better- quite frankly, i'm surprised you didn't fall for a 10/22 as that seems to be the norm amongst the 22 shooters these days- as for the ammo, I use Winchester 555 hv- it's like 333 but higher round count- also my biggest improvement was to use AN EXPERIENCED SHOOTING COACH as they can "see" things you're doing that you can't either consciously or automatically- case in point- we had one kid who kept getting failures to feed every second or 3rd round- turned out he wasn't seating the mag properly, and holding on to it, was exerting rearward pressure on the mag, forcing it to nosedive and not letting the feed ramp do it's job- when he out his hand up on the forearm where it SUPPOSED to be, the jamming went away
I suspect it is the shooter- the 552 Remington was also called the "speedmaster" and this is one of the very few complaints I have seen on its accuracy- sure, it's no anchutz, but it's been around for a long while( I contemplated one before I got my nylon 66( the 66 is more weather friendly) but maybe your definition of acceptable accuracy is different from mine- I've got a 10/22 that's fully "tricked out" for matches- but the remmy is just fine for gophers up to 50 yards or so- one thing- I would have a gunsmith go over it and make sure the barrel/receiver union ( if there is one) is tight and make sure there is sufficient pressure on the feed spring- that's for ALL 22 tube feds- also ck the elevator to make sure the round isn't hanging up somewhere- as far as bulk ammo goes, I find the bricks just as good as t he single boxed stuff- it all depends on how "fresh " it is

I'm leaning toward shooter error too.
I also think we're not gettting the whole story. At the close range he's using even junk ammo should give some sort of group but we are told it's all the same.
