20 years ago when I heard of the Paris to Dakar Rally, I wanted nothing more than to do it. But it was always out of my reach, even when I was both feet into Rally Racing.
Since that was always unattainable, I wanted to try the Baja 1000. This has been at the back of my mind for ages.
Now they made a movie about it.

Download the trailer and you will be well rewarded with some seriously cool footage. My wife saw me watching this and she freaked. "THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT?!" She knew I raced rally but she's never seen it. She never new what I was talking about.
Now when I used to do it, I did it all wheel drive Audis.
One of these days... this is my dream here... to do the Baja 1000.
On a bike.
A KLR-650

For some reason I just love the KLR. It doesn't have the most power, it's not the fastest. It's not the best any any area... but I think it's one of the best all around bikes for this sort of thing. Marketing people like to call this type of bike an "Adventure Touring" bike. I don't know what that is supposed to mean, but I like the adventure part of it. I've mentioned the bike trip I want to do next year, an around the country ride.... But man... I want to do this race! Just once. Just to have done it. This sort of race, just to have competed is an accomplishment... but to have finished it is a real achievement. To win it? I'll never know what that is like, but those that do are those I admire greatly.
My wife thinks I am absolutely nuts.

I feel your pain. I think doing a race like that would be the riding event of a lifetime. I watch the measley (sp?) Speed coverage of the Dakar every year. Only about 3 1/2 months until Dakar 05. I can't wait. I hope Yamaha brings back their 2-wheel drive bike. That was a pretty cool idea.

On a somewhat similar but totally different note, have you ever checked into taking one of those dual-sport tours through Patagonia? It looks pretty awesome to me.

Check it out.

I'm already going to do my own tour... but not just of one area. Even if that one area looks so cool.
