Since I've been laid up for a while with a broken ankle I've had a chance to discover some things on the web that I wouldn't otherwise explore. Yesterday, I discovered Larry Haun.

If you're not familiar with him, Larry did one thing...frame houses...and he did it very well. I started watching his first video with the intention of skimming through the first few minutes and ended up watching the whole thing. It's such a pleasure to watch a man who does something better than almost anyone else, and has the ability to impart his knowledge as casually as he might teach you to tie your shoes. He works mostly with two tools, a framing hammer and a skil saw, and he's amazing with both. He made these videos just before the pneumatic nailer became common, and it'll amaze you to see him repeatedly drive 16d nails with two "licks", one to set and one to sink. He free-cuts with a hand-held circular saw better that I can with a chop saw.

Anyway, here's the first video. It's mis-named, but it's the first in his series, and it'll lead you to the follow-ons. Enjoy:

I'd bet his framing hammer is like mine, 21 ounces rather than the normal 16 of the average hammer.

I've only watched about 15 minutes and learned three things so far. Not bad for an old fart who's been doing half-assed carpentry work for 60 plus years.
