A South Carolina teenager was charged with involuntary manslaughter after police say she fired a shot at a friend in a bulletproof vest, but missed the Kevlar and struck him in the heart.

Anderson County Sheriff's Lt. Shelia Cole said Blake Wardell, 26, found an old flak jacket early Wednesday morning in Greenville, put it on and asked 18-year-old Taylor Kelly to shoot him.

Kelly fired a single round from a small-caliber handgun at the vest, but just missed. Authorities say the bullet went through the lining and into Wardell's heart.

Spwenger, the article in MailOnline said...

"The victim's family told deputies that Wardell had a history of mental illness. He is survived by his father, sister and girlfriend of less than two weeks."

So, HE didn't reproduce...'course she can, I suppose. :)

I remember we were told the same thing about HELMETS- not the new style or even the m1 but the british piss- pot- well, we KNEW the 45 auto would go straight through , but what about the 9mm- so we stuck it on a board and let at it with the 9mm browning- well, straight through, and severe denting on both sides as ell- so much for bullet proof

I actually feel sorry for the girl. She was told (however improbably) that what she was about to do was harmless, made a bad shot, and took a life.

Accessory after 1st degree is the same as committing the crime?

Who notes things get confused when the law is positional.

Unfortunately being stupid is legal in every state.

The crime is involuntary manslaughter because there was no intent or malice. The DA should present the evidence to a grand jury which could either indict or not. If they do then there would either be a trial or plea bargain which could be anything from not guilty from a sympathetic jury to probation or short sentence.

To All:

This reminds me of the Darwin Award winner who recently here decided to find how long a person could stand (just over the top of a hill) out in the roadway on Interstate Hwy 35N, without getting hit by a vehicle.
(According to his GF, the answer was about 3 minutes.)

According to the BCSD, the deceased was 23YO.

yours, sw
