Anyone else have a problem with 16" AR carbines not functioning with 55gr ammo? I got a new to me used AR carbine that doesn't like to function 55gr M193 ammo. It seems to function M855 62gr ammo much better, and reliably. Is that just kind of the nature of the beast? I have a 20" rifle that eats M193 all day long, but the 16"... not so much. I fired 29rds thru a mag today (just cleaned the rifle on monday) and had 3 jams by the time it was done. I was firing Federal M193s. The other day I fired some ADCOM M855 ammo, and it fired without a hitch. Is this a common problem to the AR carbines, or am I just lucky? thanks!

ive got the same problem with my ar15a2 -colt- 20 inch barrel 1/7 twist- accuracy is you know what poor too - switch up to 62-70 grain handloads and it settles right down- sub inch groups at 100 yards, and no marmalades( i don't care for jam)

Dex, what kind of malfunctions were you experiencing? A solid carbine should eat 55's, 62's and 77's like candy, all day and every day...

Probably goes without saying, but "bad" magazines are the most common culprit.

I would be sold on bad magazines, but my other AR does fine with them. Same with the 55gr M193's. The carbine... I'm not sure what its doing, if its short stroking, or whatever. Its not stovepiping, it seems to want to not feed right. I don't really know the best way to describe it.

Its accurate with anything I've put thru it, but its not reliable with anything other than M855's lately.

I think I'll have to test this magazine possibility a little more. I sort of wonder if there's not sufficient spring tension in the buffer tube spring to throw the BCG into battery? But if its short stroking, that probably isn't right... I'm not sure. I like the gun, and I want it to run right with M193s without any malfunctions and such. It'd be nice if it was something simple like changing mag springs. Thanks so far!

Thank you. That was pretty helpful. I think the problem may be the gas block. Its one of those bolt on type from YHM with a folding front sight. Its got the brown colored stain on the barrel indicating a gas leak. I thought it was light rust. Seems like the mystery may be solved there. Thanks for that very informative link! I will post an undate as soon as I have one!

I took the gas block off, and put it back on, oiled the heck out of the BCG, and loaded 30rds into a different magazine. I then jumped in the yamaha rhino, and went back into the woods where I go to shoot, and ripped off all 30rds without a hiccup. Yup, 55gr M193ball. Not sure which solution fixed the problem. I left the magazine in question in my gun bag yesterday, and wrote RANGE MAG on it with a sharpie. Hopefully that's the end of the problems! Now I need to buy replacement ammo as I was shooting my SHTF ammo...
