Just lost it over on the CMP forum. Guy was wanting to replace the barrel in his 1911. Went to a gunshow and bought a "Unissued" HS barrel. Asked for advice installing. guys over there told him not to worry about headspace or fit of the hood because it was a Military gun and barrel! told him as long as the slide cycled correctly by hand it was fine.

I'm gonna stay off of that forum.

Jeez, I am a gunsmithing idiot and even I know better than that.

I only got on the CMP forums to see how long order to delivery time was for the CMP special I was waiting on. Since it came in, I haven't really been back.

Well, there is some truth in what they said. IF the parts are real GI spec parts barrels almost always are interchangeable.

If it really was a HS barrel they were only made during the war and went mostly to Remington/Rand and Ithaca and they had to be interchangeable or they were rejected. Provided, of course, that the frame and slide were also GI.

The issue today is that almost all new stuff is made to better tolerances due to CNC and even parts sold as "drop-in" have a warning "minor fitting may be required."
