Oh, nice plot twist! It's one of those cool "what if" ideas, and they're pulling it off pretty nicely so far. I'm about 20 mins. in and it looks pretty neat, wonder where they'll go from here.

They got a pic of the badguy turning in the gun, a Colt 1911 with a pearl handle (the kind Patton didn't like) but it violated the privacy clause of the turn in program, so the young lady officer who took the pic got disciplined.
The detectives caught the real suspect in a way they could use the evidence in court.
And 500+ guns were removed from the streets of The Naked City.
No mention of any other guns being crime guns.
All's well that ends well. Hey, it's TVLAND, what else is new?

In their latest episode, "Under the Gun" they had a look at defensive uses of guns by civilians and what motivates people to make the choice to buy one or not

Blue Bloods (TV Series 2010

The "Under the Gun" episode.

Including a great bit where someone is surreptitiously buying a gun and someone else they know who shoots comes walking into the store to buy some cartridges :)
