Closeups showing any and all serial numbers, proof marks or other markings would be of great assistance. This includes any markings on the other side of the slide, if any.

WaA140 was a German acceptance code (Waffenamt) used from the final months of 1941 until September of 1944 when they finally abandoned the factory.
A new serial numbering system was introduced in early 1943 where there would never be more than five digits total in a serial number with the first 100,000 being identified with a small a, then the next 100,000 would have a small b, etc. I would place your gun in early 1943.
From what I can see it looks pretty good for a German era gun, how is the fit and finish?

I think Ed got it right but I wonder if the sights are right? They look different almost like target sights. The front sight looks much taller.
I dug out my gun which is late 1944 and the sights look more like what you see on a GI 1911. I looked in one book with a picture of an earlier gun that are the same as mine.
The front sight is staked in so when you field strip it look under the front sight to see if there is any difference in the finish.

Definately WaffenAmt stamps on the right hand side of the weapon. I kinda expect someone fitted better sights, better stocks and refinished it post war. The refinish is probably where parts of some the WaffenAmt stamps disappeared (mark on slide). Those are generally very deep & distinct.

It makes for a great shooter (looks really nice) but not much of a collector piece. Even with the waffenampt stamps, what collector would want it? Now as a shooter, it's uber-cool, and the bluing job looks like it was well done.
