I had the pleasure of hearing Joseph Heller give a talk at the Air Force Academy on the process of writing Catch-22 and the meanings behind of some of its details. The novel was wildly popular with us during our introduction to the endless absurdities of military life, and Heller was one of our heroes. Of course, whenever we cited Catch-22 as the explanation for a ridiculous situation we used the Italian accent: "Catcha-tventee-too."

I just re-watched the original film with Alan Arkin, Art Garfunkel, and Orson Welles, not to mention Paula Prentiss. Well worth it.
