Speaking of classic Safari stuff, it seems that feral Hippos are now a problem in Colombia. Someone had better call the guy from the Safari Boat ride at Disneyland to go down there, it's the only way to be sure.

(On a Side Note, if they make controlling this problem a serious priority, maybe some Safari enthusiasts may no longer have to go to Africa - With the Hippos an invasive species, one could hardly fault a push to round them up.)

P.S., if you know someone who wants a Hippopotamus for Christmas next year, here's place that you can find one ;)

DavidE,

Fwiw, a US-based sportsman's/conservationist's group has exported hippos & rhinos to South America to get them away from the poachers. = Sounds like that some of the animals that they exported have gotten a bit out of hand.

Years ago I heard a story about a couple of young Americans who went to Africa as some kind of aid workers. They were apparantly somewhat naive. They decided to go for a swim in a nearby river, and the locals and more experienced workers told them the animals there were dangerous and not to do that.
They said something about not bothering them and the animals wouldn't bother the workers.
No one told the hippos how THAT was supposed to work.
Yup. Both died. Hippos are mean.
And they cannot read or understand English.
That is NOT a good combination.

Hopes to sterilize the animals proved too costly and attempts to find zoos to take the creatures in have also failed to find success.

So, for now, the hippos continue to have free reign and are poised to take over unless something can be done to stop them.

Boy sounds like a tough problem there?I say let one of us organize the hunts and we give Columbia 50% of the proceeds sound fair :dunno: We have our own problem in the Glades.

Thks for the link David always found his stuff interesting.;)

To All,

Statistically, hippos kill more people in Africa than lions. = The REAL consequences of "Disney-fication" of wild animals may be FATAL.

Definitely NOT "cute cartoon fat ladies in polka-dot skirts".

Animals kill you. You decompose. The soil you fertilize nurtures plants. Congratulations, you are now One With Nature...

And people wonder why I prefer to appreciate the outdoors From A Safe Distance. :)

To All,

I'll never forget, when I was a FONZ (and an active participant in Feline Fantasia), that an about 25YO woman entered the lions habitat at The National Zoo, probably about 9PM.
She was consumed by the lions during the next 6-7 hours, until the keeper arrived to feed the lions & found that the lions were sated.

Ironically, I was present at the National Zoo's HQ that night, while attending a 4+ hour lecture & reception for Ms. Jean M. Auel. Nobody at the lecture/reception knew of the incident until the next morning.
Ms. Auel courteously signed all of my series of six books about Ayla, Jondalar & their companions of THE CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR series from the EARTH'S CHIDREN books.

An examination of the woman's home computer, completed that week by DC Metro PD & agents of the USPP, indicates that she wanted to be, "- - - -- at one with the lions at the zoo. I know that they'll really like me once they get to know me."
(The lions obviously did like her very much.)

I know it's been mentioned in these discussions before, but if you haven't seen Werner Herzog's "Grizzly Man", I highly recommend it. It perfectly captures that small subset of humanity who think that large predators can be our friends if we just give them the chance.
