It took me about five years to find one, too, back in the '80s. I finally built my own up from parts. Eventually did find one--not pristine, but fairly nice and VERY shootable.

Thank you for your service commander.

I have had good luck fining things on Gunbroker and Auction arms. The search functions are good. I had been looking for Colt Camp perry .22s and found both (two different barrel lengths) on GB.

At some point, I researched how many LW Commanders had been built and was shocked at the number. I forget when I did the research, but from 1949 up until that time, Colt had only made 6 or 7 thousand of them. No wonder they're so hard to find!

Am I missing something? The LW commander is just the Commander, and it is currently manufactured. On most any given day, you can find several for sale. If I were someone interested in actively shooting one, then I would recommend the newest of the lot; they are very good. If I were a collector, I'd want a pre-Series 70. The former isn't too hard to find (not easy, but not impossible), the latter can get a little harder to find.
