I just bought a NIB WASR 10/63. It's really nice for the price, and exactly what I think of when AK comes to mind; rough, reliable and combat accurate.

A feature I've seen on other AK clones is a bolt hold-open notch on the safety lever; I really like the idea, but my WASR doesn't have it.

I'm thinking about cutting a similar notch on my rifle's safety, rather than buying and replacing it. I don't see where there would be an issue; AM I MISSING SOMETHING?

Certainly ain't no gunsmith, Pete, but you're talking about a notch that with the bolt back you slide up the safety to catch the charging handle, right? If that's the case, I sure see no reason why that couldn't be a DIY project. I say go for it.

I may be overthinking it, but there's also my concern about a ragged, unsightly job. Still, I like being able to have the action fully opened when desired.

BTW, I took it to an indoor range (rotten weather) to zero. It shot well (well, DUH! It's an AK  ) and seemed to be pretty much on zero--for me, anyway.

Maybe a grinding wheel on a Dremel to rough it out and then clean it up with the file and paper? A vise to hold it would help.

I had a Century Arms underfolder that went bang every time I pulled the trigger. I was amazed at how effective the little scalloped out "compensator" was. Muzzle rise was really much less than I expected.

I bought it when there were no AR's and very few AK's to be had, early 2011. Put an set of XS sights on it (front post has a tritium dot) and bought a bunch of 7.62 X 39 while it was still very cheap.

I think it's a damned good SHTF gun. Simple, reliable, effective.

Gave it all to my son-in-law for his birthday. He didn't have a rifle, and he's a good man.

Kept my SKS though. Another great SHTF gun.
