I've seen a Lanc up close at the RAF Museum north of London, and it is truly impressive. It is sobering to realize that, even flying all their missions at night, they still suffered 50% losses.

It's also a testament to Rolls Royce that their Merlin powered the most successful aircraft of the war: Spitfire, Lancaster, and Mustang. The sound of a hundred Merlins at a Lancaster base must have been awesome.
