Not surprisingly…

The FN 5.7 is now in the crosshairs of The Brady Bunch right after WNBC-TV4 in Noo Yawk City did a "kop killer pistol" piece on it earlier this week, and found some pants-wetting Noo Joisey "Police Chief" named Troy who wants it banned because of its AP capabilities!

I'd like to pick one up, I've started getting interested in high vel small bore centerfires, though the AP angle holds no interest. But right now they are still WAY too high in price. Too much money for so little metal. Maybe once the US models come in the IOM prices wil drop. Used prices don't hold much relief either. In the last few weeks I've found 4 of them for sale, all asking for more than new ones cost? Dunno.

I had been inquiring about building sort of a 270 version of the 25 Flea / a 270 Ren short enough to work on the single six. We got to discussing the Snapper, and Dave had a borrowed reamer on hand at the time so... next thing ya know... :D
Still kicking around the 270 idea, though it wouldn't be a high velocity round for sure.

Speaking of the .270 REN, I've often thought that the 5.7x28mm case could be necked out to 7mm to form something similar. The trick for short cylinder guns (or existing 5.7mm platforms) would be to find some of the stubby 78-79 grain bullets for the 7x33mm Sako.

Is the Five-Seven made from the same polymer they use on the FNP?

The FNP manual says not to use hydrocarbon or Teflon based lubricants as they may damage the pistol. Does the Five-Seven manual say anything like that?

It says:
"Never use hydrocarbons, trichlorethylene, ammonia nor teflon-based lubricants: they could cause damage to your pistol!"

There are no reccommended cleaners or lubricants....

It also says:
"The pistol should be checked every 2000 rounds and/or once a year because damage , wear, corrosion ... are not always visible from the outside.
For that purpose, send the pistol to your dealer."

I use Mpro-7 military grade CLP as a lube on my Five seven...its teflon free(also sold as Hoppe's Elite)

ALSO.......No more SS192 ammo will be made for civilian sales as it does penetrate L2 soft body armor...it with be replaced with the so called SS196 loaded with the 40gr Hornady V-Max bullet that will not penetrate L2 armor (this comes from the ATF website)
so if you have a 57..stock up on the SS192 as its the last you will get, and once its gone..its gone and you are stuck with SS196.

Sam Kersh posted a link to the ATF ruling on the SS196 ammo -- there is no mention of the SS192
Well, two things are immediately apparent here…
  1. The "Site Search" feature on the BATFE site bites the big weiner![/*:37ckicqt]
  2. Michael, you can't read worth diddley.[/*:37ckicqt]

According to FNH USA, FN Herstal tested the SS192 ammunition. SS192 ammunition did not penetrate the Level IIIA vests that were tested. FNH USA states that SS196, Hornady V-Max 40 gr. bullets fired from a 4-3/4 inch barrel did not penetrate the Level II vests that were used in testing.

FNH USA has informed FTB that SS192 is no longer imported for commercial sale to the United States
P99Guy… you're off the hook for now. If you're gonna name a cite, then always post the site's URL.

Be gentle with it.

FN says not to use lubes like Break-Free, Eezox, Tetra, RemOil, etc on it, it could damage the pistol (degrade the polymer when ya ask how). FN said Ballistol and Militec were OK, but Militec says it has hydrocarbons (a FN specified no-no) in it... if it comes in a plastic bottle, seems strange it would hurt a plastic frame, but hey, FN makes the gun, they should know?

The FNP9 pistol manual cautions the same. The Browning Pro 9 (same gun w safety, stainless slide) manual has no such lube caution.

I asked Browning about it, they said go ahead use all those lubes, if they damage the gun they will repair/replace it. We should get Browning to market the Five Seven? The P90 too? ;)

Jere is a big quistion??? I have a 5.7MM Johnson /22 spitfire , It is my M-1 carbine IMI put out a barrel and receiver and i bought it, It replaced my 30 carbine reciever and barrel, the 5.7MM that i use is a 30 carbine round necked down to a 22 cal 40 grain up to 50 grain bullet, is this the same round that is used in the FN 5.7,?? I still have the 30 carbine barrel and reciever and I got the dies for reloading from RCBS, all the other parts are inter changeable the Die i have also necks down the 30 carbine round.
I was talking to someone on the 1919A4 board and they said the FN 5.7 is a 32 cal case necked down?? so if that is the case then their are 2 5.7 rounds going around!!!

I like my Fn Five Seven alot, but right now with the ammo thing going on....remaining SS192 going for gallingly high speculation prices and SS196 not on line for another couple of months...Im not going to deplete my remaining 10 boxes of 192 as it would be hard to replace, and will be my actual carry ammo for here on out.
So its on gunsafe vacation right now.......I hope they get this sorted out quickly.
