Does changing the caliber on a Garand, affect its C&R status, as long as it is in its original military condition. Especially if the change is only from 30-06 to 308 Win? I can understand changing the caliber to 35 Whelen or similar would make it non C&R.

Changing the chamber/claiber does affect the C&R status, but may not change rules or other restrictions in states that have caliber/bore diameter notations.

Ancillary Thought:

Would changing to .308 by adding a "Navy sleeve" change the status too?
At least in theory, the "Navy sleeve" is removable. It would be like adding a clamp-on scope or the like.

Technically, the .308 sleeve would not change the caliber of the rifle, as in adding a .22lr kit to an AR.... but the navy sleeve will ruin your 30-06 chamber... they were originally concieved to be permanent.
