Garand & Carbine, when first available to civilians?

I'm far from sure but my cousin ROBBY B__________ got his WII-era WINCHESTER Garand from DCM in 1955 or 1956, not long after his ETS from the USA after Korea. - In those days it was ONE per customer in your lifetime & you HAD to be an active high-power competitor to get one.
I think that he paid about 50 bucks for a National Match grade arsenal rebuilt Garand with a "star barrel". - Also, he has gotten his limit on WT every year since he bought it. = DEDICATED HUNTER & true marksman is our Robby.
Btw, one member of our family, Burns F_____________ bought a .30 caliber carbine when I was in HS from DCM for about 20 bucks & when he received it he discovered that it was a fully-functional M2.=====> SOMEBODY definitely "screwed up".
(His son, William F__________ inherited the M2 carbine & registered his carbine as an NFA weapon it under the BATF's AMNESTY PROGRAM, about 1966-68.)

A lot of outlaw firearms got registered during BATF's amnesty. I knew a couple of folks with .410 pistols, both single and double barreled that made it onto the registry. And some lever action handguns also made the list. Texas lawmen were more interested in what you were doing than what you were packing. In my 20s I wondered around with a SAA in a drop loop holster and no one was the least bit bothered except may a tourist of two.

At least they kept it tucked away until BATF decided they were just too over run with outlaw firearms.
With the way things were here in Texas and San Antonio's Saint Anthony and Menger Hotels favorite spots for Mexican plotters looking to assassinate the lastest Presidente or damnedyankees working to steal farms from the Mexicans this side of the River with plans of orange groves bigger than anything California had, life was a dangerous place and BARs and Thompsons were legal to buy and carry then. The NFA of 1934 had a lot of those toys grandfathered and those that weren't made in when BATF hollored Uncle and opened its registry for 30 days in 1968.

IF the "Big Shots" at BATFE had functioning brains (QUESTIONABLE at best!!), the agency would REOPEN the AMNESTY period for at least another YEAR & NOW (and perhaps forever).
IF the goal is to get "contraband" in out of the cold, that's they way to accomplish the task.
There are literally THOUSANDS of UN-registered NFA weapons out there that would be registered IF the agency was SMART enough to do it.
(I'd bet that I could find any number of FA .30 M2 Carbines, AK, G3 & M16 "clones" here in Bexar County, if I went out looking for them.)
IF I was willing to break the law, I'd bet that I could buy a complete set of M2 parts at ANY Texas gun-show, in less than an hour. = I've seen ever single piece for sale by "parts vendors" for YEARS, locally.
