Hello, new user here. I've been looking in anonymously for awhile and decided to finally take the plunge. Lots of interesting folks here, and the thing I like most about it is, the atmosphere here feels a lot like when you attend a large (or small) gun show. Everyone is nice, polite, respectful of others opinions, even if they don't necessarily agree with them... I like that.
That's what I like about the gun community. It's like an Amway convention or a Tea Party rally... you rarely find a-holes there, just nice people willing to put out their hand in camaraderie, if not friendship.
I should probably explain the People's Republic of... remarks. If you lived in NY or NJ and were of a particular political persuasion, you would immediately understand, but for those fortunate enough to live west of the Delaware River, our benevolent politicians (cough) fervently believe it is their duty to take care of all of us gun owners who can't be trusted to own a weapon, so they heap upon us all manner of onerous rules and regulations specifically designed to piss off anyone with more than half a brain.
For example, the last time I went to the outdoor range, (about a 45 mile trip since they are scarcer than hen's teeth) I stopped off at a convenience store and got a couple of soft drinks and used the head. According to the PRNJ Legislators, that made me a felon.
The law here says, that you must go straight to and from the range with no stops in between, and anyone caught with a weapon NOT going directly to or from the range (or gunsmith or store where you purchased a weapon) faces a mandatory sentence in the State Pen.
Don't believe me? Google the name 'Shaneen Allen.' In 2014, a mother of 2 from Philadelphia had a legal CC license in PA but when she crossed into NJ on her way to a birthday party, she was stopped by an officer. She told him she had a concealed weapon and offered to let him hold it during the stop. He arrested her and she faces 3 years in prison.
NJ doesn't recognize ANY CC licenses from ANYWHERE. And there are only 32,000 CC licenses in this state of 9 million people (excuse me, subjects), and almost all of them are either former LEOs or current armored car company employees.
To me, friends, that is the next best thing to living in a communist state. Ergo the "People's Republic" moniker.
Why don't I leave? I blame it all on a four letter word. W.I.F.E.
Ok, enough said. After this I'll try not to be a... you guessed it.... Big Bore.
