I can't say I'm surprised, really. I hate to see anything banned, and hope it goes no farther. I must say, however, that I have no use for bump stocks, and I think they're stupid and a waste of $$$$ and ammo.
I also find it sorta hard to get around the idea that they really are a smarty-pants work around of the NFA of 1933. I'm also against that philosophically .... but like it or not, it is the law.
Listening to the Mandalay Bay video of the gun fire it does sound full auto. My brother in law is an ex U. S. Army Ranger (Pathfinder) and has seen numerous actual fights in almost two dozen different actions, and he stated Steve Paddock's gunfire sounded like an AK-47.
Let's pray we don't see any more action --- and I note that this afternoon, the Florida legislature decided against taking on a new assault rifle ban, so there is reason to hope.

GunGeek,

Inasmuch as the BATFE once defined "creating a machine gun" as a shoelace, a paperclip & a rubber band.
(When asked under oath by a US District Judge HOW that that was "making a machine gun" , the BATFE agent said that he didn't know HOW that it could be done but that position was the decision of BATFE. - The judge dismissed the case with prejudice.)

Therefore, I do NOT trust the BATFE to act in consonance with the US Constitution or even commonsense.

yours, sw

As a general rule, I think we're far better off with the BATFE than without. I think they honestly do try to work with the industry as much as possible. Unfortunately, it's also an agency that draws zealots who do some really stupid stuff from time to time.

I don't know that we can "trust" BATFE, but I have concerns about a world without them. All of the BATFE talk that has happened before talked about turning enforcement over to the FBI. That's a fundamental change from a regulatory agency to a law enforcement agency.

I listened to Trump's comments. Improving mental health care is necessary, there was reference to improving the background check system, good move; there was a caution about feel good measures that have no impact; looking for solutions that have a background of success and improving security.

I have some reservations on improving metal health screening. We don't want to scare people off from receiving care. We also don't want people who seek help labeled mentally ill inappropriately.

Improving school security is very much a legitimate action. Most of it is non-existent. OK, they've "got a program" but it's a sham.

What a bump fire stock does is, basically, turn the shooter's finger into an auto-sear. From there it's sort a philosophical debate as to whether or not that makes the gun a "full auto."

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he has signed a memorandum directing Attorney General Jeff Sessions to propose new regulations that would ban devices that can effectively turn legal weapons into machine guns.
A bump stock does NOT turn a weapon into a machine gun. The firearm still needs the trigger to be pulled each time a cartridge is fired. All it does is cause the sear to reset by moving one's finger and the trigger forward momentarily.

As to using a shoestring to do the same thing is no big deal if you know how and I do.

Florida does its own version of a NICS but even if the FBI had done it Cruz would have gotten a GO. The WHY is simple, he had no criminal record, no involuntary commitments for mental issues or TROs and was of legal age.

As to mental health screening, Obama used that ruse to strip thousands of vets of their 2 Amendment rights and most likely caused others not to seek help.

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) - A man who pleaded guilty to stabbing 20 fellow students and a security guard at his suburban Pittsburgh high school was sentenced Monday to 23½ to 60 years in prison.

Man gets at least 23 years in prison for school stabbings

Do a search on stabbings in 2018 and they are more frequent but the knife that lived long before the gun is still out there.

You can bump fire without any special stock. I had a range buddy that used to do it all the time by mistake. It was his shooting technique that caused it. I have seen it done on purpose with an M1 Garand.

More gun control from the right. Trump wants rifle ownership age bumped to 21, and he thinks NRA will back it.
I have no problem with that as long as they bump the voting age to 21 too.

I'm going to stick to my ancient ways, If you are Old enough to Die Serving Your Country then you are Old enough to reap all the privileges that your Country bestows. JMHO. If you can't drink or own a pistol in Conus until you are 21, than you shouldn't be able to serve or vote until you are 21. Once again, JMHO.

Don't trust La Pew. He's let us down before.

I don't often agree with M118LR but I said the same thing. If you're too young to own a firearm you are too you to be in the military.

How many Americans are killed every year by 16-to-21-year-old drivers? Maybe we should raise the driving age to 21, too. Maybe THAT's a good idea. Maybe THAT would save some lives.

Hey, if it saved just ONE life, wouldn't it be worth it?

Snake, In the last number of years, I have seen the drinking age raised to 21. Here in New Jersey, I rolled my eyes as the age to buy tobacco went from 18 to 19, and then to 21.

Now there is talk of 21 being the limit to buy a rifle or a shotgun.

If this is the case, should 18 year olds be voting? If they are pressing for the idea that people at that age are incapable of making such decisions, isn't voting a decision that requires adult, capable thought?

I am wondering if the "youth movement" is thinking this path through?

I went to school one day night's, but it took me allot of years to learn how smart my Old Man actually was! I'm not sure that I was any smarter at 21 than I was at 18, so perhaps if folks at 18 can't gain any experience, 21 will then become the age of inexperience? JMHO.

What ever happened to a 16 year old hunting and shooting under the watchful eyes of thier parents? Perhaps 18 was the proper age with proper tutelage. So when does 23 become the proper age with proper tutelage?

So this is that Seminole moment. :p

Okay, I pride myself on having a factually debatable and opposite opinion even though we both have a long and storied shared history of experience. But if we both see eye-to-eye on a topic, we need a makes more than God allows FAR LEFT WING never going to serve a day in thier life Democrat to chime in. :dunno:

I'll admit that I've taken a few "Devils Advocate" stances just to rile Y'all up and make the common folks put butter on thier popcorn. But it get's extremely boring should we both agree.

Can we get back to agreeing to disagree??????? ;)
