Mel Gibson's movie based on a real person and event. WWII and the Japs are dug in literally into the mountain that forms the ridge. Desmond Doss is a CO who refuses to take up a rifle but does everything he can to go into battle as a medic. As a CO and his actions he is given the Medal of Honor.

Incredible timing on this post; I just watched Hacksaw Ridge about a week ago.

It is unfathomable that some men can reach resources deep within themselves and accomplish the impossible. Desmond Doss should not have lived through his experiences. If you haven't yet seen the movie I strongly encourage you to do so.

Cases like Doss's make you wonder how people can say there is no God... it was surely a Higher Power watching over him that day that enabled him to pull it off.

If it was still allowed, Desmond Doss would have won a second CMH just a couple of weeks later. He was a singular man with a unique fearlessness and sense of calm in extremis circumstances.

While I found the combat scenes a bit overdone and "Holly-woody", the movie was just excellent. Of all the war movies I've ever seen, this is the first to show how fierce our foe was in the Japanese soldier.

The other thing I was struck with was the luck of the poor guy. His first battle was Okinawa...Oh, that sucks. Okinawa was every bit as fierce as Iwo Jima, which is to say, an enemy with a nearly inhuman persistence.

My youngest son said it was the best movie he's ever seen. While I can't say the same, it was a fantastic movie, deserving of it's Academy Award nomination.

Any body who doesn't think we should have used the A bomb on Japan should have to read a good book about the Okinawa campaign. They made so many Purple Heart medals in anticipation of the invasion of Japan that they are still being issued today.
