Life gets complicated. Folks in Texas get clannish. But for a guy that's used to putting 100 rounds a day down range with a primary , the Family vacation is intolerable. The family vacation started and ended in St Augustine. I'd like Y'all's opinion if it's time to forego the range membership? Folks like me from North Florida might have a heavier weight to their opinion. But I do respect the opinions of our Texas Based Brethren. :(

Fortunately many of us in the local Charlotte club don't have to face that choice. The club discounts membership fees for retirees, and gives pretty generous credits towards annual dues for any volunteer work you do. So, many of us serve as RSO or as club instructors, or go to the monthly maintenance work sessions, and the accumulated hours mean we pay nothing for our memberships.

The new State range is about 30miles away for me and Nice! $40 a year though it does not have the hours local range carries is now $200+.So maybe a state range if it's cheap enough? or have a good friend with some land/terrain?

I haven't regularly shot at a public range in decades. I have a great gravel pit about 2 miles from my house. Before that, I had a 150 yards for casual shooting in my back yard, and 1,100 yards on the property when I wanted to stretch things out a bit. But honestly, for the past 15 years I'm more of a handgunner than a rifleman.

Funny story.

The day I learned how horribly rusty I was with a rifle...

There was a 9" steel plate at a friends range at 150 yards. He had a new Steyr Scout rifle he was shooting. I missed 3 off hand shots in a row. Got pissed off, and rung the plate 3 times in a row with my .38 Super.

After that, I made a habit of taking my rifles out much more often.

The thing about the semi-privet range I've belonged to for years is that changing clientele have different desires. Back when the Senior members mostly laid on the ground and shoot Service Rifle, the 600 yard range was the place to be. Couple of years back most of the Old Service Rifle Shooters had passed, and perhaps only one or two folks would utilize the 600 yard range during the course of an entire day. So the 600 yard range became a 300 yard range and an action shooting range took it's place. Most of the folks on the 300 yard range nowadays seem to be Bolt Action Folks.

In this corner of North East Florida 50 yard indoor ranges are sprouting like weeds. I thought that they would mostly be utilized by hand gunners, but their a bunch of AK-AR Semi-auto folks slinging lead at an unbelievable rate. I guess A/C and rapid fire restrictions has become far more entertaining than Service Rifle. Things are changing and the Old Standards for basic marksmanship don't seem to be of concern. Am I just getting to Old & Cantankerous, or is Service Rifle Marksmanship dwindling outside of my little corner of North East Florida?

Well it has never been "big" per-se...but it certainly has dwindled.

However in military circles, marksmanship has gone up a good deal with the introduction of optics.

NRA now allows optics up to 4X, during certain Service Rifle Competitions.
