The HK USC carbine is a civilian version of the UMP. I guess you can compare them in the same way HK marketed the HK 94 to civilians and the MP5 to law enforcement. The USC/UMP are based on the new HK theme of using reinforced carbon-fiber. Another rifle available to the public of similar construction is their SL8-1 in .223.

The downside with the USC is the rather large size and low magazine capacity. The barrel is 16 inches, the stock is fixed, and the overall length is 35 inches long. The magazine capacity is only 10 rounds. The UMP is the full-featured version (LE/military only) with a 7.8 inch barrel, folding stock (like an AR-180), and an overall length of 17.7 inches (stock folded) or 27 inches (stock locked open). It comes in 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. It also comes in either two round burst/semi or full auto/semi.

What would be competition to the USC? Not much. There are AR-15 conversions that have been done in the past using UZI mags. There is also the Ruger Camp Carbine. If the magazine capacity was greater than ten rounds the USC would be pretty decent to own.

My interest in firearms is predominantly hunting, and then self-defense and plinking. I just never have been able to get excited about para-military look-alikes. Don't misunderstand me, please; if it floats your boat, all well and good.

There are so doggoned many of these things out there, and most of them leave me with, "So, what's the point?"

I dunno...

I just like owning unique calibers and firearms I dont see often.sometimes I cant tell if your shooting a 100 year old winchester or a brand new one.
dont see many 45 acp rifles, probably because of the low velocity.I guess I could just get a 30-06 and go hunting long range, but hunting season is one lousy week here the other 51 I'm at the range or in the country blowing up milk jugs :)
Aw, there's no doubt that plinker-guns are fun. I've probably thought more of dual-purpose: A mix of fun and "serious stuff", like rabbits and coyotes as well as tin cans.

Back when I started reloading, all I had was a .22 semi-auto and a 1917 Enfield '06. Reloading makes any gun's shooting very inexpensive. Lead gas-checks made it possible to a bunch of '06-ing on a low budget. (And, wow! Was that budget low!)

To me, most all of the para-military stuff is awkward to handle, compared to conventional stocks. And Lord knows, I've tried most everything, at one time or another...

What's it for?
What do you mean," What's it for"? I'm afraid I don't understand the question. If you mean, what do I use this rifle for, the answer is mostly plinking. I also use it to hunt prairie dogs, coyotes, and racoons. This version is quite customized as you look at the gray factory model and mine. I was quite upset that HK copped out and made a bright gray rifle. I'm not quite as PC.

I have never shot a USC but would really like to own one but just couldn't afford one. I said the same thing about the HK 94's back in the early 90's and never purchased one. Now I wish I had purchased a truckload because they are going for $4k and up! Back in the late 80's and early 90's they were readily available for less that $1k.

I agree that the color scheme, funky thumb hole stock and low magazine capacity are not its most endearing qualities but help is on the way. There are several companies which are making a UMP style folding stocks and lowers which allow for the use of readily available greasegun mags. Prior to the AWB I felt a 10 round rifle was about as useless as a .50 Cal. handgun. Now with the ban lifted a USC makes a very nice sub-rifle. I still wouldn't mind having one for the right price.

  1. Of course you know what the question means… in witness whereof you answered it perfectly.[/*:1zsdi9b9]
  2. Plinking's great… so's huntin' varmints and pests. Thanks.[/*:1zsdi9b9]
  3. What's "PC" about gray? It happens to be one of the primary elements of urban camo, so where's the "cop-out?"[/*:1zsdi9b9]
  4. "In a world of compromise," in which H&K likes to brag that "some don't!," HK, Inc. has a disgraceful history (remember the price gouge on the SP89 11 years ago?), but I don't think gray guns is part of that.[/*:1zsdi9b9]
But what do I know?
