With all of the threads regarding the desire to stock up on ammo, I was wondering what the maximum amount of rounds one can legally store in a home, apartment, townhouse, etc. without some sort of an ammo license?

I've never heard of any federal regulations. Check your state, county, and town. Homeowner associations and insurance policies might have something to say, too.

Truth to tell, I don't think I've ever heard any concerns about this, nor anyone ask the question, so I don't think it's a huge problem, except possibly in some local areas.

It doesn't matter if you have one box of rounds or hundreds of boxes, when you die the paper will say you had an "arsenal" in your house.

SpecialEd,

100% CORRECT, except in TX
(And perhaps if you should die in Austin.)

Fwiw, when I was stationed in Baltimore in 2010, a man died & WBAL reported that he had a "- - - -- large arsenal, that should be prohibited to civilians".

THE BALTIMORE SUN, which is NO friend of The Second Amendment, reported in a back page of the Sunday Sports section, that the "arsenal" consisted of a Mossberg .22LR bolt-action rifle & a 20-gauge single-barrel shotgun.
(The trunk of my car has a larger "arsenal" than that 24/365.)

Fwiw, I'm looking for several hundred more LAKE CITY once-fired M2 cases to reload as .30-06 JSP/GCCB and/or to reform to 9.3x62mm

Correct. I have also read an article which supports your statement too

This totally depends on what, if any regulations or ordnance's your town has, and what an apartment owner may limit you to.

Usually the only limitations are for safety reasons in case of a fire.
In most areas there's no limit on modern smokeless powder ammo, but there are usually strict ordnance's on black powder since it's an explosive.

To find out you can contact city hall or probably the fire department.

Ummm...I wouldn't. This is exactly the kind of question that stirs up concern where none existed before.

If you really have to ask a question like this, start with something else. For example, walk into city hall and tell them you want to be in compliance and would like to know how many 100-gallon vats of llama milk you're allowed to store on the premises. If, within a week or so, there's a new llama milk ordinance in front of the city council and candidates for Llama Milk Compliance Officer are being interviewed, I'd probably hold off on the ammo question.

harveyspector; All,

Out of purest idle curiosity, I looked through my source documents & find NO restrictions in city/county/parish/State information that ANY of those jurisdictions have limitations on the ownership/possession/storage of ANY conventional ammunition of less than .52 caliber or shotshells.
(Some US military facilities restrict personnel residing in on facility government family quarters to 100 rounds of rifle/shotgun/pistol ammunition at any one instant. Further for junior enlisted personnel/BNCOQ/BOQ, there are too many local variables to make a general statement on this subject.)

This does NOT mean that some private premises or NGO groups may not have such restrictions.

Captain Gyro,

And "- - - - with the reet pleat & the drape shape & the stuff cuff"??

Are you planning to join a new/updated version of the LA "Zoot Suit Wars", like those terrible RIOTS of 1943??
(Fwiw, my late uncle Wayne T. B____________, PO3, USNR was on shore leave at that time & "blundered into" the riots. = His only comment that I remember was, "It was a sure 'nuff horror story, My shipmates & I were lucky to get away with our lives."

CaptainGyro,

UNDERSTOOD. = RotflmRao.

Btw, at my age I sometimes don't remember things from years ago BUT I just remembered something that may be "of interest" to members of the Reserve Components of the Armed Forces & the National Guard. = According to DoD regulations, members of the Reserve/NG may NOT store more than a case of ammo W/O a "fire & theft resistant ammo locker, lined with 'non metallic materials', in the event that they are allowed to retain government ammunition in their quarters."
(For several years, I was ISSUED a S&W Model 52 .38SPL target pistol, an AMU-modified M1911A1 pistol & many boxes of ammo, as I was "involved in" competitive handgun activities. - The TXARNG also issued each of such SM a heavy steel/lockable storage box for the handguns AND a similar lockable container, that was lined with wood, to comply with the DoD regs. - Each of us were also issued a pair of "protected shackle & pick-resistant locks" for the containers.)
