I have an M1D almost identical to the one up for auction, from the 1996 DCM lottery. Mine was an April '69 rebuild from Tooele Army Depot, apparently to refill depleted Viet Nam inventory.

It would have been a terrible idea to leave this rifle and accessories in the packaging for over 10 years. The rifle was totally dry, no preservative comoline or grease of any kind, and there was corrosion starting in the gas cylinder. The leather cheekpiece was showing some signs of not liking its packaging. I kept all the packaging and paperwork. I haven't fired mine either but I have detailed stripped, cleaned, and lubed it. It looks great. If doing that costs me some resale value some day, so be it. Yeah, I've thought about firing it, but I've got lots of other Garands to shoot so I haven't yet. :)
