The Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area today is a far cry from what it was a generation ago. When we were dating in back in the '90's my wife and I took off for a weekend getaway from northern Virginia, through Great Smoky Mountain National Park, and on into Gatlinburg. It was a relatively charming and quiet hamlet at that time, and we had a nice dinner at a cool little restaurant built along a stream in the forest. Pigeon Forge was down the road. The only sign of impending commercial invasion was an outlet mall on the edge of town.Never been and since I'm a Tennessee native I reckon I should go.
Retirement ain't that far off.
Sorry, Ed it's been a busy couple of days. We came out fine in my neck of the woods, the south central part of the county, but we had an EF-3 hit the western part of our county. Several homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed, lots of trees and power lines down. No one killed thank God. Had to run a lot of extra patrols for traffic control and security.Hey Irish, did you get any interesting weather last night?
Tommy, we didn't lose power either, which living out in the country is amazing.I'm not Irishcop but I live in the same town -- and yes we did get some ... "interesting weather." Starting at around 9PM we got rain, wind and lightning. There were tornadoes that hit north of us. Heavy rain and lightning persisted until maybe 2:30AM or there about this morning. Five deaths in the N. Alabama/Tennessee area due to this ill weather. I understand there were power outages but atleast for me here in Decatur Alabama it didn't even blink.
It's still dark dank and drizzley out there; temperature about 65°F outside, but it is supposedly going to clear up.
Also, nasty fires northeast around Pigeon Forge Tennessee are decimating the area .....HUNDREDS of homes & businesses gone ....DUE TO AN ARSONIST!!!!!:argh::argh: :cluebat:
Sorry, Pete! Since I knew Birmingham was okay, I just didn't think to give you a shout-out.Y'all didn't ask, but I'm telling...Birmingham got a steady, soaking rain--perfect after such a long dry spell. The biggest risk we had was slippery roads from grease & oil being floated off the pavement. We had some windy rain Wednesday, which gave rise to a tornado warning.
Now it seems we're back to a normal rain cycle, every few days to a week.
No problem! I didn't mean to come across as complaining, just jumping into the conversation.Sorry, Pete! Since I knew Birmingham was okay, I just didn't think to give you a shout-out.
Glad you guys had an easy one for a change!
