Friday Congress should have gone into summer recess. That might have meant the death of the AWB. But the 9.11 Commission's report has caused Congress to plan on a rare August session. Senator Fineswine is still looking for a bill to hang her amendment on. So far Majority Leader Frist has succeeded in keeping her bottled up in this effort. Who knows what will happen with the Senators rush to go fishing?

Congress Plans Special Hearings on Sept. 11 Panel
By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG and PHILIP SHENON

Published: July 24, 2004

WASHINGTON, July 23 - Moving swiftly on the recommendations of the Sept. 11 commission, House and Senate leaders announced on Friday rare August hearings to draft legislative changes.
Even then, the AWB can come back and haunt us if Kerry and Company prevail this November - as can the S&W/HUD Agreement.

yep, special hearings with both the Senate and House to reconvene on September 7th. That could give the usual suspects enough time to ram through their amendments. After all, it took less than 15 minutes for the Hughes Amendment to become law in 1986.
