Can someone tell my why any lowlife criminal such as John Muhammad is referred to as a "Mastermind" or "Criminal Mastermind?" To me Mastermind implies at least, above average intelligence and cunning, etc. Why is it that any one who "plans" a crime or who can stay one step ahead of LE is referred to as a mastermind?

Maybe the resident Language Pedant can enlighten me (I know Dean, I should have bigger fish to fry it's just one of those little things that bug me. ) :evil:
