It is worth noting that Torpedo 8 arrived ahead of the dive bombers and fighters, and made their approaches even though they knew they were sitting ducks for the unencumbered Japanese fighters. They scored not a single hit; they were all shot down. I believe Ensign George Gay was the sole survivor.
Such men!
Their sacrifice was not in vain, though, because the Japanese fighters were back on the carrier deck rearming and refueling when the American dive bombers did arrive... and the dive bombers' attack runs were unchallenged by Japanese fighters.
