There are a lot of bad people who intend to do harm to police but IMHO ambush slayings are the most despicable and vile ways to assassinate police officers.
I still remember maybe seven or eight years ago just north of where I live, in Athens, Alabama, a sociopathic nutcake put in a 911 call to attract police, then laid in wait with an SKS rifle and assassinated the two police officers who responded.

This is a terribly unnerving story, especially considering the size of this department and it's location. Just not what you would expect to see.

But then again, the Athens incident as related by Tommy...it isn't exactly a bustling metropolis, either. The shooter had been diagnosed and supposedly under treatment for most of his adult life. Yeah...right.

If it makes anyone feel any better, the day after his transfer from the county jail to Kilby prison, he was found dead in his cell, under rather mysterious circumstances.

I read about the ambush when it originally happened and assumed it was someone with a personal vendetta against that officer. After this threat it could be someone with a vendetta against the department or narco terrorists staking a claim to some territory.

Back in 1993, a student from one of our HS called 911 stating a student was on campus with a pistol and was going to start killing students/staff. He hung up so I had dispatch call the PP back. He answered, when she started questioning him to specifics, he became irritated and said "just get here or I'll start now". So now we knew the shooter was calling on himself. So I responded to the rear of the school off a side road. We found him laying in wait by the student drop off p-lot right where we would normally pull into to the school. He had a pistol and about 300 rounds. He told me he was watching from inside the quad and when he could see us driving up he would start randomly shooting and invoke a shoot out with us, the cops. He was a GATE student, extremely intelligent and gifted. He was committed to mental facility until the age of 25.
Scary kid, he had that 1000 yard stare and lifeless eyes. Flat and calm demeanor, much like he was ordering lunch or some daily task.
