i just saw some lc nm 308 brass from patsreloading for $149/500. i was told that lc nm brass is the best brass to use on an m1a. is this worth buying. where else can i get good brass for the m1a.
cisco,

Other than not having the primer crimp to contend with, not any different than regular LC. The nice thing about LC Match, as opposed to regular LC, is it's not likely to have been fired in a machinegun. Take a good hard look at Pat's never fired Rem military brass. At $100 per 1,000, I sent Pat an order for some.

I got approx 2000 of the RA brass from Pat's and its holding up great after 4 loadings. Shooting it out of a bolt action Savage and very pleased with it. If you want the LC NM brass I was talking with Brian at the Medina, OH show this weekend and they are selling like crazy!! If you want something you better call Pat or Brian and see how the stock is holding up. They was selling like mad out there and Brian said he will be doing nothing but mail order for the next couple weeks. Call and check and place that order or you will be  .

I plan on making a trip out after X-mas and before the new year to get the goodies. I picked up 3000 CBC pulled 147gr 30 cals off him at the show and some 50 BMG API tips. Should last me awhile!!
Been pumping the handle on the Dillon and making up some Plinkers.

cisco,

42.5gr of Varget with a 175SMK should be a good load. I'm presently loading 42.2gr of surplus IMR4895 in LC Match brass with a 170gr Lapua bullet.

How is that load grouping for you Don? I am thinking of trying some Benchmark out I picked up at a show. See how it shoots!!

For some reason my bolt gun likes 4895 and turns its nose up at the Varget!! Got me :duh: !!

Been loading 2230-C with the CBC pull downs and having lots of fun shooting 600 meter gongs with pretty good results!!! Just switched that crappy plastic stock of the Model 10 Savage and its starting to dial in real nice  Happy, Happy!! Now I have to look into a little better glass than the Milllet 6x25x56mm that I have on it. Maybe a Mark 4 Leupold!! The local Gun shop has a Nightforce Benchrest 8x32x56mm with the NPR rect. I called Nightforce and they will put a Mil-dot in it for $120 and turn around in a week!!! They want $1099 for it!!! New in the box and its real nice!!! Maybe switch the Mark 4 Tactical off the AR50 onto the 308 and put the Nightforce on the 50???

Decisions!!!

Link to picts of the new stock, very happy with this setup.

suasponte,

Here is what it does for me:

I found the above 42.5gr load to be a might warm during the summer months, so have since backed off to a 42.2gr load.

Let us know how your reloads turn out after you fire them. I believe that this brass (RA), has deep primer pockets. People say that it shoots ok, however, the photos I've seen after folks have reloaded it, causes me to not want to buy it. With newly seated primers they definately are seated deep!

Ah yes, Terry, I remember that post now. Can't wait to see these "deep" Rem cases for myself. Did all your loads go boom?

Yes, Don they all went BANG. I got several ammo cans loaded up with the RA brass, 2230-c powder and Pats CBC pull downs. I get 1 1/2 MOA @ 100yds with this setup and plink 600meter plates all day long with it. I am very happy with this brass and will be picking up another thou after X-mas.

You will be happy with that brass!! It has performed well for me barring the deep pockets!! Get some Birchwood Casey liquid brass cleaner a 5gal bucket and some boiling water. dump all the brass in and let soak for 5 minutes the rinse, dry, tumble as normal.

This brass out of all the military brass I have prepped has the most prominent ring crimp of all!!! Your Dillon Super swager will get a work out.

Terry,

I've also got Pat's CBC bullets, and will be loading them in the Rem cases with surplus IMR4895 for my soon to arrive FN FAL. In that rifle platform, I will be very happy with 2 - 3MOA. I've been watching people going crazy buying Paki and Indian ammo lately that they wouldn't ever CONSIDER buying a year ago. I try to tell them that they would be better off buying quality components and assembling the ammo themselves, but it seems to fall on deaf ears. BTW, Pat said he was nearly out of the Rem brass, but expected to have some LC soon.

I am going to Pats the end of Dec. or early Jan.. Pick up some 50BMG things and probaly 308's. Brian said that they are getting low on the CBC's so I may pick up another 3000 just to have!!! They sure don't spoil and they shoot pretty well for just plinking at steel gongs. The 55gr FMJ's have dried up and now the 308's may so I am trying to stock up while its still available!! Like you said guys are buying ammo that they would never have considered. I can shoot quality reloads for what they are paying for for the crappy stuff. Reloading is sure paying off right now but if you have some extra $$$$ laying around stock up on the surplus components while its there!!!

Terry,

Well, my Rem brass from Pat's arrived. Have found a few that have the remains of a primer (not live) left in them. You can see where someone tried to decap the primer, but instead of the primer coming out, the decapping pin simply punched a hole in the primer. My attempts to get them out with my universal decapping die have merely enlarged the hole. Just wondering if you got any cases like this, and if so, if you were able to remove the spent primers?

Don:

All the brass I got which is approx 3500 all had the primers removed except for 3. Pat and Brian did tell me when I picked them up that there may be a few that had the primers still in the pockets just as you described. The Ring crimp in some cases is just too much for the decapping unit, or the primer is just too thin. I used a scribe and picked them out. Good brass for the $$$$.

Maybe I will get some of the LC when I go out.

This may have been mentioned before, but Match brass is much more likely fired in standard chambers than non-match brass, which may have been fired in machine gun chambers. I ended up with a batch of the latter and only got one reload out of them before many showed incipient head separations. I dumped them all in the recycle bucket. Not very economical even at $.04/ea at the time. I'm still working on a barrel of LC Match brass I snagged when I had the chance. $.07/ea many years ago. I load GI equivalent and they'll go 6+ before I have to dump them, with a neck anneal after the 3rd or 4th firing.

markw76,

This brass is from disassembled ammo, so no "machinegun" issues. No need to even resize them; all I do is neck size them.

Terry,

What is this "scribe" you spoke of?
