Leather or Plastic?

In the quest for a good IWB holster for my Glock 36, I decided I wanted to try the Workman from Mitch Rosen. But... then I browsed a bit more and found that BladeTech offers the same Workman concept (IWB that provides for tucking in the shirt) but in Kydex.

Existential conflict: LEATHER OR PLASTIC? Waddaya guys (and gals) think?

Most everybody loves leather... Why? I would think plastic would be thinner and more durable.

Anybody out there carries in plastic? Would like to hear from users of thermoplastic holsters and from those who have tried them both.

Plastic ain't got no class...

I've used a couple of synthetic holsters for ccw but have always gone back to the ARG.

I often use one of the kydex types- usually a paddle type to slip on and off easily- at the range if I want to do drills or such but that's all.

I find leather much more comfortable for IWB than plastic. I am not opposed to using plastic for OWB especially for training classes so I don't scuff up my "Dress Leather".

What Jim said. I have a Blade-Tech IWB for my GM, and I tried to use it for daily carry instead of my Rosen ARG. It is not as comfortable, nor is it as stable as I'd like. And, as Charlie noted, plastic just doesn't have "class."
I only use my Blade-Tech for shooting IDPA matches. I do like the fact that it offers a clean, fast presentation, but don't like the fact that I have to adjust it before every stage. When I've shot using my ARG, it's always where I want it.

Nemo,

If you've decided on the Workman don't forget to also get a Rosen Belt. I've found I wear my tapered belt more then the non-tapered.

Remember, a holster is only one part of the system, you need a good belt to stablize the holster. Not to worry about the price, it will last a decade or two (heading into my second decade with my two and they still look and work great)

So, more than 10 years with your Rosen rig? Impressive!

On the aspects of how cumbersome and printing, how would you describe the tucked-in shirt over the workman holster?

Nemo, I only have a Rosen ARG for my GM, and mine has been in service since late '94. I wanted to get a Workman for my Kimber Ultra Ten II (see avatar photo), but Mitch would have needed the gun for about a month to six weeks and it would have been prohibitive in cost, as it would be pretty much a "custom" holster. I decided to go with a Tucker Cover-Up. It's the same idea, but nowhere nearly as nicely executed as Mitch's Workman. It works well for me in spite of the fat butt of the UTII. You just have to make sure you blouse the shirt tail enough, and of course, as always, there are certain movements you need to be mindful of because they can cause printing. My experience with the ARG leads me to imagine that the Workman would be even better than the Tucker product. The best part of the Workman is that the belt loop is so well camouflaged as a key keeper; the Tucker just has a plastic clip which can serve the same purpose, but it's not very good at it.

Friend of mine bought Byanqui's knock-off of the Workman and had a similar flaw in design.

If Rosen's ARG is too much for your pocket book, take a look at the Milt Sparks Summer Special, SSII or Heritage holsters. All IWB, well made and comfortable.

My fav is leather from High Noon Holsters. It's some good stuff. I've got one or two for each of my carry guns. My favorite out of the bunch is The Undertaker for my SIG P229.

Rosen ARG with an offside light\mag scabbard for my 4" gun. Only because I got me some learnin' before I spent a lot of bucks. I use plastic sometimes at the range.

Started with a kydex IWB and really didn't have problems with it. Was pretty comfortable (I thought) until I picked up a used Sparks VM-2. Wow! For me, the VM-2 was considerably more comfortable. Couldn't believe the difference.
