well it seems that I am going to be out of Backpacks real soon and I am on a budget.

I would like to know if anyone can recomend both a decent Daypack and a larger Backpack for field use.

The daypack is going to be for transporting everyday stuff while the Backpack will hopefully make it out to the next family tirp into the Trinity Alps.

Any sugestions?

If you are on a budget, then I recomend the large alice pack for the large pack role. There are better packs out there but it will cost you some bucks. I modify mine by taking a USGI foam sleep mat, and cutting a section out to fit snug against the frame putting it between the frame and your back. Actually...any type of foam will do as long as it will hold up to the rigors of the job. I also modified the top by sewing on a homemade pouch, and a pouch for the bottom of the pack. note.,,,,, The pouch on the bottom is used primarily for a sleeping bag. Most bags can be fastened without this pouch, but I designed it to hold it so that it would make less noise, be less bulky so it would not snag on tree limbs/brush, and to keep the bag from exsses movement whilr Im moving. As far as the smaller "patrol type pack' goes...... Blackhawk has several good ones that I used in Iraq. Check out thier website for your self. They also have solid large rucks as well.... http://www.blackhawk.com

I forgot to say this, but the large ALICE ruck must utilise the frame. The medium ALICE cane go with or without the frame, but not the large type. BTW....If you can affoed the medium, then you can afford the large. The medium is not much better gear holding wise as some of the Blackhawk day packs, althou if you look around then you will find a MED ALICE for less bucks than the BH packs.
