Friends,

After many years of being my usual EDC handgun, the slide on my Sig-Sauer P225/P6 is looking pretty shabby.

The slide alone needs to either be re-blued OR "parkerized" BLACK to return the handgun to looking OK.

There was once a member of the forum who did manganese Parkerizing & bluing, too. but I have forgotten who it was.

IF any of you do either process, please respond to me with your "turnaround time" & charge for either hot bluing or Parkerizing the slide, by PM.
(As this is my EDC handgun, I cannot wait 6-8 weeks for the service, as the two firms that I've found locally say that they require to do the job.)

Thanks for reading this.

yours, sw

Brownells carries the stuff for Manganese Phosphate finishing/refinishing. I used to do the old zinc phosphate in a ceramic coated steel pot on the stove. High tech it ain't. The most critical part is getting the metal CLEAN before dunking.

IIRC, I did the manganese finish once (complimentary kit) and had a bit of uneven coverage due to not getting the metal super clean. A bead blast is a good prep, Scotch-Brite might do it.

William R. Moore,

YES, I've seen the 89.oo containers of Parkerizing solution on Brownell's website. - By the time that I purchase the container of concentrate & all of the needed other needed "stuff" to do Parkerizing, the cost of doing ONE slide is $$$$$$.
(Evidently, they no longer sell the small "one job" bottles anymore.)

Fwiw, several times since I retired from the USA, I've been tempted to get into the business of bluing firearms & Parkerizing too BUT given our "somewhat unsettled" personal situation, I've not done so.

THANKS, sw

Back when, I'd parkerize and have the bluing done by someone with the polishing/finish stripping talent and the willingness to handle really serious hazmat stuff. The chemicals in the bluing process are seriously hazardous stuff.

Recall that back when, the polishers at S&W were on the job 20 odd years and demonstrated their skill before they got to do 29s and 27s.

As I noted, I made do with one of those blue ceramic pots and made sure the steel was clean. The temperatures were around 170 F (candy thermometer) and while the solution was 3% acid, it wasn't as hazardous as bluing salts.

Might check Robar. Cerrakote?

Here's some professionals who offer parkeizing. Check with them on turnaround times, and on the types they offer.
These are not fly by night operations.
Some will be backlogged and have long turnaround, some may be able to do it ASAP.

Brownell's sell a dip solution that causes standard park to come out flat black, and some of these sources may have it or do the type of park you want.

dfariswheel,

THANKS for your input, too.

FYI, 3 of those firms were companies that I contacted before posting this thread & they do NOT do "small jobs" at all OR require a "turnaround time" of 6 weeks to 90 days.
(One man said that their company minimum for such work is 100.oo AND no guarantee of "turnaround time".)

sgmkersh,

I contacted both companies more than 2 weeks ago, as well as every LGS that is within 50+ miles. = NEITHER is interested in "small jobs".
(Dury's Guns only "sends out" refinishing jobs to an out of TX jobber.)

The south TX LGS complete lack of interest in doing "small jobs" is the major reason that I posted this thread, as I was hoping that at least one of our many members, who is "in the refinishing business", would be willing & able to do things of this sort promptly & at a reasonable price.
(Nagel's charges the same price to parkerize a small part for a firearm as they so for a complete rifle.)

csmkersh,

I talked by phone with the gentleman & YEP he's a nice guy BUT he said that the slide bluing alone would be 75.oo unless he has to re-dip it more than once.
(IF he thinks that it needs "re-dipping" that the price will be more.)
And he doesn't know for sure when he will be doing a batch of guns that need to be re-blued. - maybe next week.

He said that he won't be doing Parkerizing anytime soon.

So, I'm still looking for a person that I can afford, will give me a set price AND that will do this small job SOMETIME SOON.

yours, sw
