Well, it's winter in the NorthWET, and anyone who's been stationed west of the Cascades knows how miserably soaked you can get in just minutes. Not the kind of weather my usual dress oxfords fare well in, so I need something waterproof and preferably with decent ankle support and a fair amount of structure in case I need to administer a shoe-leather suppository, which set me to thinking combat/duty-type boots.

Anybody out there who's done Field Time as either .MIL or LEO have suggestions for reasonably close to GI spec on a budget? I figure that standard should be able to handle the couple of miles I have to walk every day without a hitch and hopefully still see me home with dry socks at the end of the night...

I tell ya, this crap about changing my socks twice a day is gettin' OLD fast. :p

Danner makes excellent boots, you'll never go wrong with them. I'm partial to Merrell just because I find them more comfortable. But figure you're going to pay over $150 for a decent pair of boots. I have back and knee issues, so I really don't mind paying what it costs to get a good pair of boots because it will pay dividends over a pair that's not right.

Here's what I have now and I'm pretty happy with them.
Men - Moab Mid GORE-TEX® Wide Width - Dark Earth | Merrell
