Researchers from NC State have recently demonstrated that vehicle armor using composite metal foam (CMF) can stop ball and armor-piercing .50-caliber rounds as well as conventional steel armor, even though it weighs less than half as much. The finding means that vehicle designers will be able to develop lighter military vehicles without sacrificing safety, or can improve protection without making vehicles heavier.

But what is the cost? Can it be manufactured in quantity? Will QA have to xray the whole plate?

The questions arise: under what conditions? The standard testing for armor involves multiple projectile hits in a specific pattern to maximize stress in the area at a given range. The standard for small arms is a square 2 or 2.5 inches on a side plus one dead center.

OK, it weighs half as much. Exactly how thick does the stuff have to be? This impacts vehicle size and interior room.

How does it do against the various shaped charge/explosive formed penetrator rounds?

Exactly how does one repair/replace damage? Many of the ceramic armors are one use items.
