Let me tell you how his fellow pilots see this: Right now hundreds of Harrier jocks around the world are thinking, "What a lucky SOB. Why could't this have happened to me?"
I mean, you dream about having something like this dropped in your lap...not a thing wrong with the jet, it's flying just fine, it's going to land just fine...the only question is whether or not you're going to scratch it, and there's almost no downside if you do because, hey, partial gear. So you fly around for a while and burn off the gas, exhaust all the possibilities for getting that wheel to drop, land from a low hover the same way you do every day, and wait for your medal.
Lucky stiff.
