I've always relied on the mail-order nursery companies since they are familiar with what can grow where. The two I've used before are Gurney's and Spring Hill. At the very least, you can go to their sites and see what your climate zone is and then see which trees and roses can handle that zone. Once you have an idea of what you like, you can visit a local nursery and see what they have in stock. When I moved to NC from NY I did the very same thing.
