Hey guys .... looking for some info and opinions on my rifle.. I have a savage bolt .30-06 factory gun ... am I asking too much to be able to run this weapon at 600 yards regularly or is it fiesable to build a load for this distance with a stock rifle? Thanks guys

But more seriously, I'm going to assume that you are talking about target shooting? So a stock rifle won't give you any accuracy advantage against most serious 600 yard competitors. But you should be able to work up a load or two that can group around 1 MOA or a little less for informal target work.

what I did and what lots of ex-mils do is take a look at what the people in the competitions are using and copy that as much as possible- there used to be a load for the m14 on the net called the m118slr- 175 grain sierra match king, mag primer and 44 grains of 748 powder-there's volumes of work by ziediker amongst other others- I copied his work religiously,even if it is in 308- you can increase your loads to 06velocieties- mine are a little warmer than his- 180 grains at 2610 vs 175s at 2550- but mine are hunting loads not targets
I was just talking to some of my long range buddies and the reason some of them don't use the 06 length action is that it's "too long and springy" if that makes sense- one of the guys I know that constantly wins matches uses a 308 , the m118slr, and a 10x scope - with a harris bipod- and he's a 1thousand yard shooter- he STARTS off about a yard in elevation-and that's by looking, I didn't actually measure it
and forget factory made cartridges- they're too inconsistent

Got the right pill, but the wrong propellant. Leave the ball powders in the can, extruded powder is this secret to accurate success.Ball powders measure easily, but throat life is decreased exponentially. More than just MHO. But what would I know?

Ball powders flow well t-star, they aren't the answer for tiny groups even if you swap precision barrels every 1K rounds. Stuff a few rounds of IMR or Alliant in your 30-06, better yet talk to Hummerville about his loads while Palma shooting if your looking for a definitive answer. JMHO.
PS In days of yore the 30-06 wasn't filled to capacity, (but those in the know tapped their rounds prior to insertion) so the .308 Win (7.62 NATO M118 Special Ball or M118LR) with it's full case load proved to be more consistent. But with modern powders the 30-06 is a more consistent performer at the 1K range or better nowadays. That being stated, the armed services require even more than the .308 Win or 30-06 can deliver as Min Specs, so the M2010 which shall soon be replaced was chambered in 300 Win Mag. Remington offers rebuilt M-24's on a tier system for anyone with proper certifications. So the requirements of the competition determines the equipment to seriously compete like Skeptic49 alluded too. There are no limitations afield that I am aware of.
