What FLIR do you have? I haven't seen any under 7-8k bucks! I figured I would get a PVS14 since those can be had for 2000-3000$ without to much difficulty.
I've got one of the Raytheon units.
Here's a thread where we were discussing such things recently:

They're significantly more than the $8K though.
Here's the problem with NVDs: head mounted doesn't work for weapon usage, and a weapon mounted NVD doesn't work for anything BUT weapons.
There are only a couple of options that I've found (I'm not saying that these are the ONLY two options, but they're the only two I've come up with):
1. Use pot-mounted goggles for looking - when a shot is needed, make sure you see your opponent first! Swing the pot mounted goggles up, and use a weapon mounted NVD to aim with.
2. Use a target designator (like the Atilla-200) and pot-mounted NVD, not "sighting" the weapon in the traditional way.
Obviously #2 has the problem of being an active emitter. But it's MUCH faster than #1. And of course, #1 is more accurate at any kind of appreciable range.
When I get more trigger time in with both, I'll have a better idea of which is better, and in for what jobs they would be best.
