who has night vison in their kit?

swat here uses thermo vision inside buildings because they get better veiws of walls and floors in complete darkness but are going to a thermo/night vision combo and looks like a few of us may get a good deal on the themo units

Night vision is ok but if you want the good stuff go get a Spector IR this thing is to good to be true. My local PD got one 10 grand was not cheap but it is the best night scope I have ever seen. If you poit it at the woodline you can see the squirrels in the trees in pich black. It gives you a ghost like b/w image but if I had the extra 10 grand sitting around I would buy one. You can pick a person out laying in brush from about 100 yards no problem. You have to see it for yourself..

I have a Gen III NV Scope. Only drawback, really, is that you have to mount it in daylight, sight it in, then dedicate one rifle for it and never remove it. Too hard to re-mount/zero at night in the field. (Where you may not want to be firing off blasts of light/muzzle-flash)

FLIR (thermal) is tremendous. I've got one of those in my kit. The only thing better? One of the hybrid NV / FLIR devices. At this point they're outside my capabilities though......

NVD weaponsights have gone to the extreme. At this time, you can get these (the Raptors are a good example) where you can ID a target farther out than you can call the wind. Calling the wind at night? Now THAT is a tricky passtime! Only hits count.

For me, I decided to stick with the non-magnified weaponsight, the PVS14. On a defensive stick (with Aimpoint M3), it sets just behind the optic, and works just great.

For navigation, goggles are the way to go. I've got mine mounted to the pot.

They're significantly more than the $8K though.

Here's the problem with NVDs: head mounted doesn't work for weapon usage, and a weapon mounted NVD doesn't work for anything BUT weapons.

There are only a couple of options that I've found (I'm not saying that these are the ONLY two options, but they're the only two I've come up with):
1. Use pot-mounted goggles for looking - when a shot is needed, make sure you see your opponent first! Swing the pot mounted goggles up, and use a weapon mounted NVD to aim with.
2. Use a target designator (like the Atilla-200) and pot-mounted NVD, not "sighting" the weapon in the traditional way.

Obviously #2 has the problem of being an active emitter. But it's MUCH faster than #1. And of course, #1 is more accurate at any kind of appreciable range.

When I get more trigger time in with both, I'll have a better idea of which is better, and in for what jobs they would be best.

I've used both and the IR laser method is really fast. Much faster then the weapon mounted, but not as precise. For general survival I think a gen3 NVD is a really useful tool. The thermal would be nice but I could buy quite a bit of land around here for what I would spend on one. Id rather have the land Hopefully they keep coming down in price.

I have one of the (very) cheap monoculars. I paid about $140 for it several years back. Similiar ones are now about $110-125. It is only occasionally useful. I use it when camping and otherwise playing at night. I would not get a NVD unless ALL other preperations are already taken care of. I rate NVD's as one notch lower than kevlar body armor in my list of preps. Just my $0.02 worth. I have had a chance to mess with some very nice NVD and IR setups. If I had $10K on hand with no other obligations, I would seriously look into aquiring those (again, after all other preparations were in place).
