Manhattan braced for direct hit from Hurricane Irene I was in NYC for six weeks during the summer of 1999. It didn't rain at all, the entire city smelled like a sewer and it was oppressively hot. The day before I was to leave it finally rained. Rained so hard that the A and C line trains were shut down because the tracks were flooded. That's the main north south subway in Manhattan. That was a few inches of rain at high tide. What happens when they get twenty inches at high tide combined with a storm surge?

Well, I hope no one is hurt...but I doubt if Bloomberg will show near the leadership and strength that Rudy Giuliani displayed during 9/11.

Only been to NYC twice, and both visits started and ended at JFK in the 70's. Still have absolutely no desire to re-visit the city, even in that limited capacity.

Still here in Delaware. My house is in a location that doesn't flood so our main concerns are wind and power outages. Took down the canopy over our deck and put away anything that might become an airborne projectile and that's about all we can do.

I have a cousin who lives part time in a building his family owns on central park west. Even living like a billionaire makes the city barely palpable. I visit him about every third year for a week or so and we go to all the trendy and cool places and he spends a fortune and I'd much rather be in EBFE or some northern minnesota fishin bar than there. It's a repugnant to humanity place.

He says people are split down the middle on this one. Either freaking out as it's EOTWAWKI or shrugging their shoulders and pissed that the last weekend before labor day is a washout.
