Aside from the cruelty bit: Why would he tell anybody? If it were known he'd had the ferret, when he went to his next flight, why not, "Aw, I gave it to a kid who was leaving the airport."?
Back to "cruelty": Popping an animal's neck is about as humane a way of killing as there is. Nobody thinks twice about wringing a chicken's neck, or banging a cow between the eyes with a hammer. Or shooting Bambi, for that matter.
Dead is dead. If it's quick, how is necessarily and by definition cruel? (I agree the guy was stupid for not learning today's rules of air travel.)
