..was how one fellow employ put stated it.
Here I am at the counter checking in a Father (late 50s) and Son (Mid 30s) who are heading out to the rifle range to sight for a deer hunting trip up in GA.
I open the first case and there is a CETME. OK, now for the other case. The father states "Your going to find this interestng!"
As I open the case I see a Springfield Trapdoor - 45-70, very good condition and notice it doesn't have a front sight. The Father remarks he got the gun back when he was 12 or something like that and brought it home on the handle bars of his bike. He also stated that it was originally an "Infantry" length rifle but had been cut down to carbine length. Hence the absence of a front sight. Any collector value this gun may have had had been taken away.
My eyes continue down the barrel and they stop at the receiver. I blink a couple times to make sure I'm not seeing things but yes, it is still there!
On the receiver, right above the chamber is a Weaver rail apoxyed there and attached to that is a BSA Red-dot scope.
I blink a few more times, while I mutter "That's not right!" a little too loud. He asks me what I said and I look at him with pitty in my eyes and say "That's not right... it is just WRONG!" a Red-Dot on a Trapdoor?" His reply"Really neat, hun?! The Trapdoor even clears the scope" which he says with a grin.
About that time the store Manager, who has seen most everything, walks over with a confused look of disbelief in his eye as I proudly hand the gun over to him. He looks it over and says "Now thats DIFFERENT! Not something I would have thought of or done."
Seeing we are in the middle of our 24th Anniversary Sale and the owner of the store is running around I figure if the Manager had never seen something this stupid neither has the owner... so off I go with the rifle in hand.
I find him over in the "Tactical" section and walk up saying "Hey KA, want to see an Original Entry Weapon?" He looks up, does a double take and says "You've got to be kidding me, who's gun is that!?" I point out the customer and say he's going out on the range to sight it in for a deer hunting trip. He shakes his head and hands the gun back.
As I arrive back at the counter where the customer is here comes our Gun Smith (an extreamly vocal individual when it comes to guns). I motion him over and try and hand him the gun. He just stands there looking it over and states "I've got no comment!" and walks away.
While I can understand the reasoning of putting on a Red-Dot scope and an argument can be made for anything, some things are just not right no matter how good the arguments and reasoning. I wanted to take the gun and tell it I'm sorry and it will be alright.
Another employee who had seen it put it best... First the gun was rapped the that guy sodomized it. Well put brother, well put.
