Some 30 years ago I swapped from the Type II to the Type III on my Inland and my groups shrunk by almost 50%. Now my M1 carbine is a solid 2.5 MOA rifle if I do my part.
The type 3 actually only contacts the upper "tab" of the receiver, but it offers more support within the stock. There's no way to tell if it will be a tighter fit on your particular carbine because there's no way to tell why yours is such a loose fit; because it shouldn't be. But it's very much worth a try before you send it off to a gunsmith.

spwenger, Couldn't get your site to open but the receiver is an Underwood #284xxxxx and the stock is a low, oval cut Trimble Nursery (TN). The stock inletting is a perfect fit for the top of the recoil plate and there's no cracks or weakness. The recoil plate doesn't move.
Keven Gibson, Will the Type III plate require any stock inletting modification or is it designed to fit all GI stocks?

Thought I'd try making what's there fit before getting another recoil plate. I cut a piece of Brownell's .600 shim stock to fit the front of the recoil plate and attached it to the plate with a little JB Weld. It's a tight fit now with no movement. I haven't shot it yet so don't know if it will hold up. I've had good results with JB Weld on other stuff so maybe this will work.

Okay you're stressing an already stressed memory. I believe it will drop into all stocks. Mine is a late pot belly stock and it dropped right in. Do some google-fu and research it a little.
