RR got into the 1911 making business in 1942 with a government contract. They had zero experience in that endeavor and promptly set up an new division to build them. Another company with no experience in firearms was also given a contract to build 1911s for the war effort; Singer Sewing Machine. Then there was Utica, High Standard and maybe a couple of others.

A friend of mine got a High Standard through the NRA/CMP program. I missed a chance on a Singer at O'Bar's Guns here in SA years back. The Army issued me a Utica and a Colt at different times.

Those were the days.

How many Singer .45 pistols were actually built, IF you know?

I've seen exactly ONE in 73 years, maybe 4+ decades ago. = It was in a glass display case in THE TANK DESTROYER MUSEUM, which was once at Ft. Hood, TX.
(Our tour guide, an Army Buck SGT, pointed it out to the group.)

SOUTHERN RAILWAY EQUIPMENT & SUPPLY CO., from Alabama, got a "test contract" to build the .45 Pistol but I don't think that ANY complete pistols were actually accepted by the government.

I talked to "Little Brother Ed" (who has forgotten more about the .45 pistol than I know,) tonight & he believes that at least SOME small parts were produced for the 1911A!1 by SRES but NO complete pistols at all. = The "test contract" was UNSUCCESSFUL & was "withdrawn".

Sorry about the slow response. Singer made 500 but their contract was for about 20,000. When Singer gave up they "gave" the contract to Remington to complete.

Better late than never. = I've always wondered about that.
(Like I said, I've seen exactly ONE & it was in an Army museum at Ft. Hood, I'm guessing about 1970-75. - I was a TXARNG escort for a group of WWI GIs that Summer weekend.)

I stirred so stuff at Hood with the German officers attending triple A school. We were lined up for noon chow when the Germans tried to cut the line. An E7/SFC told them to go to the back off the line. Their leader said they had to be back in class at 1300. I replied so did we, get to the back of the line. Guess he'd never seen a POed feldweble before.
