bestseller et. al.,

well said. = he was a GREAT guy, as well as a good film/TV star. he will be MISSED!

when i was SDUSM long ago, the "feebies" said that they had J. Edgar Hoover as a "role model".

otoh, we DUSM said, "OK. but we have Marshal Dillon." = that usually put a quich stop the the FBI's bragging!
(fyi, James Arness was ACTUALLY sworn in as an a DUSM & was still sworn at his death yesterday.)

yours, sw

During World War II, before James Arness portrayed U.S. marshall Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke, he was the first American soldier to jump off his boat at the Anzio beachhead. He was ordered to do so by his commanding officer because, standing at 6’8" Arness was the tallest man in his company, and the water’s depth needed to be tested for safety purposes.

fyi, "Chester" was protrayed as having a "gimpy leg" on Gunsmoke to COVER-UP the ACTUAL limp of James Arness, who had been WIA in WWII.
