OK, new to these fine rifles.

RTFM and the stuff about slam fires, mention of "sensitive" primers on commercial .308 ammo spooked me a little.

OK to shoot commercial .308 in this, or stick to 7.62 mil-spec only?

Mine has a chrome-lined bbl; does that make any difference?

You can shoot commercial ammo in it just fine. Springfield Armory recommends shooting commercial ammunition.

Most commercial ammo is OK. I would not shoot commercial 180g hunting loads. Heavy bullet may mean they used a slow powder for the load. I would not shoot "light magnum" loads since these are high performance loads intended for bolt action rifles. Stick with the bullet weight that is appropriate for the rifle, 142g to 175g.

Every headspace tag that I've looked at on an SA Inc M1A has read between 1.631 and 1.633 (but I'll admit that I haven't looked at more than a handfull of them). With that sort of headspace you should be fine with either commercial SAAMI or surplus ammo.

If you're out past the SAAMI .308 Win NoGo (which is common on Chicom and certainly USGI M14's), then you should stick to NATO surplus only.
