From the Feb. Issue of American Rifleman, page 36, in which Rick Hacker explains the changes between the 1911 and 1911A1:

"...the grip safety spur was lengthened to help curtail the all-too-common occurence of 'slide bite,' caused by improperly gripping the handgun...that resulted in the slide slicing the web of the hand during recoil."

"Slide bite" in a 1911? Really? Has the Hacker confused the 1911 with the Walther PP/PPK series?:p

i've got the welt to prove it- try your left hand- he is correct , athough i wouldn't call it a slide bte- and i do grip my 1911 properly- it's just aft of the web, more towards the finger- i switched over to a bevertail type( ed brown) back in the 90's but the scar is still there- and it gets refreshed when i use my stock remmy rand

When I think of slide bite from an improper hold, I think of people who put their weak hand thumb over the back of the firing hand. Crawl up on this some and even a 1911 could bite you.

But I fail to see how a longer GS tang would prevent such a thing. I tend to think they were trying to reduce hammer bite.

Sounds to me like you got bitten by the hammer, not the slide. Hammer bite is pretty common with the 1911. I've never heard of slide bite with one.

He also botched the business about the hammer being widened for the 1911-A1.

The 1911 had the old long wide hammer spur, and the 1911-A1 just slightly shortened the spur. Later in the war they changed to the narrow hammer.

A bad job of work all around in that article.

His name is "Hacker." What do you expect? Wonder if he ever went by the diminutive nickname of "Dick?"
It took everything I had yesterday to NOT post it as "...the aptly named Rick Hacker..." ;)
