Well darn ... Just heard that A&E cancelled Longmire so now I wonder If I'll ever find who was shot in the incident between Branch and his father. Guess I'll have to look into finding the books. Does anyone know if the series was following along with the books or were they just using the characters as a starting point?

TT, there was a lot of "follow the books", but Branch only appeared in one book.

A&E promises a reply within 2-3 business days to email, but it's been a week since I sent them my "you canceled Longmire, I'm canceling you from my watching habits" with not even a "we regret losing your viewership".

Then again, A&E has been circling the drain for a LONG time... it's not the "Time Well Spent" when I tuned in daily for their "Mid-Day Mysteries" programming block first thing after clearing the door back in high school.

Part of it is that the schlock of "reality TV" is cheaper, not having to pay union wages with SAG or Screen Writers' Guild.

Well that's a shame since they're leaving so much unanswered. I was hoping to find out if Branch overcame his lack of loyalty to Longmire which disappointed me to no end.

I suspect that A&E may well be going the route of "reality" since it is cheaper but they also forget that so are the results. There's no way that I'm going to tune in for a "reality show".

I will look around for the books and believe that as usual I'll actually find them more enjoyable that I do the show.

All about the ad dollars... and the advertisers are targeting twentysomethings who'd rather stream or hang at Starbucks or go out dive-crawling with friends than sit on a couch in front of the TV at home anyway.

Yeah, I read that is was both the age of the viewership (translates into us old farts) and the higher profit margins of so-called "reality" TV.

Thank God for Netflix.

Well kind of an old thread and somewhat old news but I just found this out and may be some of the others might find it interesting. From Netflix's website:

Nov 19, 2014
Beverly Hills, Calif., November 19, 2014- Netflix, the world's leading Internet TV network, has ordered a fourth season of the hit drama Longmire, from Warner Horizon Television. Ten new episodes of the series will premiere exclusively in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in 2015.

"When Warner Horizon Television came to us with the idea for a new season of Longmire, we were intrigued because the series is so unique, and consistently great. We are thrilled to help continue Walt Longmire's story for his large and passionate following," said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix.

In a joint statement, the Longmire executive producers said: "We're excited and honored to have the opportunity to bring this show that we love so much, and all its devoted fans, to Netflix."

Season four of Longmire picks up moments after season three's exciting finale. Walt Longmire (series star Robert Taylor), having found out who was behind the murder of his wife, succumbs to his darker impulses and takes off in pursuit of the killer with murder on his mind. Meanwhile, Branch Connally (Bailey Chase), the deputy who Walt fired for erratic, violent behavior, believes he has already figured out who the real culprit is. But during his confrontation with this suspected killer, a gun goes off. Now the audience will finally learn what happened, and whether Walt can be stopped before he makes a fatal choice.
Now if only I had Netflix.

I've read all the books (twice) and the short stories but they are waaay different than the tv show, (no surprise). Henry Standing Bear is as big as Longmire and much more intimidating. Longmire's wife died of cancer in the books, Lucian Conally has a much more prominent roll, and the best character of all "Dog" is not in the tv shows. The books even made a trip to my little neck of the woods including a favorite place of mine for intimate concerts and the like; The Grand Opera House of Wilmington, DE.
