Great line from Masters Of The Air:
"I think never in history has there been such a conquest of women by men as was won by the American army in Britain in World War II."
Yanks were the most joyful thing that ever happened to British womanhood. They had everything- money in particular, glamour, boldness, cigarettes, chocolate, nylons, Jeeps- and genitalia. The Yanks were sex-mad and countless British women who had virtually no experience in this line were completely bowled off their feet (and on their back, I suppose I should add). . . . Almost every working girl aspired to 'have a Yank.'

one of ike's pet peeves was that we didn't(the collective we) all share the same cartridge- while the smle was a good gun, it was a logistical nightmare- ww2 is so full of logistal f/us it's a wonder the allies won at all- the ak hiway was built in he wrong spot, and we had to go with the sherman instead of the t-34- it would have been far smarter to build an ak type hiway up the EAST coast to maybe davis inlet or ungava bay, maje a superport there or maybe just throw a pontoon bridge- it's only 26 miles- and come down the west side of greenland

I wonder if there was a mysterious baby boom starting around 1944. Many family trees probably sprouted an American branch without anyone realizing it.
They realized it. Most of the young Brits were in North Africa. The Americans that did come forward were usually transferred to a different base.

To All,

I'm NOT at all sure about overpaid, oversexed & over here BUT the GIs of WWII, who were in GB, certainly got married to a great deal of YL from the British isles. = Well over 100,000 before VE Day.
(The TRANSATLANTIC BRIDES & PARENTS ASSN is still active in 2016, though most of the ladies are at least 90YO now & the vast majority are now widows. - In 2015, the youngest of the WWII brides who attended the TBPA Convention was 77YO.)

Btw, of the 14 men who served with my dad on that one B17, my dad & 2 other men were married before WWII to an American lady. Of the other 11 men, 8 married a lady from Europe either during WWII or immediately thereafter.
(I have NO idea if that was typical or not.)

yours, sw

csmkersh,

Are you saying that "overpaid, oversexed & over here" was just a case of SOUR GRAPES from OF in GB??

yours, sw
and to a certain extent I ran into the same thing in Germany back in '87. Since I was always in uniform and a .45 in a shoulder holster the old folks would stop me and ask if I was an "Englisher." Once they learned I was American and especially a Texican we became best friends. Seems the Brits were heavy handed in their occupation while we Americans moved on.

Then again, there have also been long and strong ties between Germany and Texas, like New Braunfels being founded by a German prince. :)

Prince Solms settled Solms Texas South of New Braunfels, New Braunfels and some split off and settled Fredericksburg, Boerne, Bulverde and I think Pipe Creek. Then here in San Antonio there was the King William district and German was used by the city council as was Spanish.
